Tips for Studying for Leadership Chapter 1 (downloadable from link above):
1. Read the chapter. You don’t have to read it all at one time; break it into small sections. Fill out the Notes handout as you read. A suggested reading list is:
-
Day 1: Page 6 to top of page 9 (Welcome to leadership)
-
Day 2: Page bottom of page 9 to 13 (Core Values)
-
Day 3: Page 14 to 15 (Cadet Oath)
-
Day 4: Page 16 to 19 (Air Force Tradition)
-
Day 5: Page 20 to 21 (Uniform and Cadet Grade Insignia)
-
Day 6: Page 22 to 23 (Drill & Ceremonies)
-
Day 7: Page 24 to 28 (Chain of Command)
2. Listen to the chapter. You can listen to the chapter as you read along, or you can listen while you are taking a walk or doing your chores.

3. Pay attention to bold words, definitions, and key ideas. Take notes on your reading. Mark these sections in your chapter with a highlighter. This will help you later as you review before your test; the highlighted sentences will show you what to focus on in your review.
4. Complete the Learn to Lead Chapter 1 Crossword Puzzle and Word Search puzzle. These will help you review some of the key ideas and words in the chapter. Be sure to highlight these in your book if you missed them in Step 3.
5. Watch the Learn to Lead Chapter 1 video on YouTube. Several years ago, a cadet made a video series to help other cadets. This cadet eventually earned her Spaatz Award!

6. Can you answer the questions at the end of the chapter? Look at the Review Quiz on page 28 and try to answer the questions. You could have someone help you with this or you could do this by yourself. It isn’t a real quiz, but a tool to help you know what you need to work on.
7. Need more practice? Consider a Kahoot! game or use the flashcards/games on Quizlet. Other CAP members have made many helpful tools for you to use. And you can always create your own games if you like!

8. Take your test! Tango Flight cadets will be given a pre-test on paper during one of our meetings. Don’t worry if you don’t do well – but you will probably do better than you thought! This will help you know what areas you need to study more for the final leadership test.
9. Didn’t pass? Go back and read the chapter again. Focus on the areas you highlighted. Repeat the other options that may help you: listen to the chapter, play the games, use the flash cards. Ask someone to help you explain anything you don’t understand. When you are ready to test again, let the squadron commander know.
10. Passed! Awesome work! You have not only met the objectives of Chapter 1, but you have learned new ways to help you study.
