Read the chapter.  You don’t have to read it all at one time; break it into small sections.  A suggested reading list is:

  1. Day 1:  Page 6 to 8 (Professionalism/Standards)

  2. Day 2:  Page 9 to 11 (The Non-Commissioned Officer)

  3. Day 3:  Page 12 to 14 (The NCO’s Leadership Toolkit)

  4. Day 4:  Page 14 to 18 (Coaching & Mentoring)

  5. Day 5:  Page 19 to 22 (Supervision & Constructive Discipline)

  6. Day 6:  Page 23 to 25 (Motivation)

  7. Day 7:  Page 26 to 29 (The NCO / Officer Relationship)

  8. Day 8:  Page 30 to 34 (Team Dynamics)

  9. Day 9:  Page 35 to 36 (The L.E.A.D. Model)

2.  Listen to the chapter.  You can listen to the chapter as you read along, or you can listen while you are taking a walk or doing your chores.

3.  Pay attention to bold words, definitions, and key ideas. Take notes on your reading.  Mark these sections in your chapter with a highlighter.  This will help you later as you review before your test; the highlighted sentences will show you what to focus on in your review.

4.  Complete the Learn to Lead Chapter 4 Crossword Puzzle and Word Search puzzle.  These will help you review some of the key ideas and words in the chapter.  Be sure to highlight these in your book if you missed them in Step 3.

5.  Watch the Learn to Lead Chapter 4 video on YouTube.  Several years ago, a cadet made a video series to help other cadets.

6.  Can you answer the questions at the end of the chapter?  Look at the Review Quiz on page 93 and try to answer the questions.  You could have someone help you with this or you could do this by yourself.  It isn’t a real quiz, but a tool to help you know what you need to work on.

7.  Need more practice?  Consider using the flashcards/games on Quizlet.  Other CAP members have made many helpful tools for you to use. And you can always create your own games if you like!

8.   Work through the Cadet Interactive module for a final review and practice.

9.   Take your test!   You can test online through eServices / Axis or request permission to take the test on paper at the squadron.

10.  Didn’t pass?   You have to wait seven (7) days to retest on Axis.  Take this time to go back and read the chapter again.  Focus on the areas you highlighted.  Repeat the other options that may help you:  listen to the chapter, play the games, use the flash cards.   Ask someone to help you explain anything you don’t understand.   After seven (7) days, you can retake the test if you feel ready.

11.  Passed!   Awesome work!  You have not only met the objectives of Chapter 4, but you have learned new ways to help you study.
